Matters Needing Attention in The Use And Management Of Oxygen Cylinders

May 09, 2022

Filling beyond the inspection period. Medical oxygen cylinders meet the GB5099 standard and the "Gas Cylinder Safety Supervision Regulations" of the former Ministry of Labor. Oxygen cylinders are valid for 15 years, and are subject to mandatory inspection once every three years, and can only be used after passing the inspection. Its purpose is to find out the safety status of oxygen cylinders in time, and to find defects and hidden dangers in time to avoid accidents. However, the phenomenon that the oxygen cylinder is filled beyond the inspection period during use is serious, which brings serious hidden dangers to safe use.

Accessories are damaged or missing. The accessories of the oxygen bottle include bottle valve, hand wheel, bottle cap and shockproof rubber ring. The bottle cap is to prevent the gas cylinder valve from being damaged by impact during the handling process, or even being broken to cause the gas to be ejected at a high speed, pushing the bottle valve and the handwheel to fly forward at a high speed and causing casualties. The shockproof ring is a protective device to prevent the gas cylinder from being hit, and it requires a certain thickness and elasticity. The "Gas Cylinder Safety Supervision Regulations" clearly stipulates that when transporting and loading and unloading gas cylinders, protective caps must be worn. However, in actual use, there are very few oxygen cylinders with complete accessories. Most of them have no bottle caps and handwheels.

Sun exposure. "Cylinder Safety Supervision Regulations" stipulates that gas cylinders should be transported and used in summer to prevent exposure to sunlight. Because the volume of the oxygen cylinder is limited, exposure to the sun will increase the temperature of the medium in the cylinder, resulting in a sudden increase in the pressure in the cylinder, putting the cylinder in a dangerous state. Some users do not take sunshade measures during transportation, and expose the oxygen cylinder to the sun when using it in summer. Especially in summer, the road temperature often reaches more than 40 degrees. If the gas cylinder itself is defective, overfilled or collided with each other, an explosion accident may occur.

The safety distance is not enough. "Gas Cylinder Safety Supervision Regulations" stipulates that oxygen cylinders must be used 10 meters away from open flames, and it is strictly forbidden to store them in the same room as acetylene cylinders. However, many users ignore this requirement. There is a phenomenon that the distance between the oxygen cylinder and the welding point is less than 10 meters during the welding operation, and the oxygen cylinder and the acetylene cylinder are stored in the same room. Once the gas cylinder leaks and explodes in the event of an open flame, it will cause irreparable damage.

Brutal loading and unloading. During transportation and use, the phenomenon of brutal loading and unloading is very common. For example, during short-distance transportation, the oxygen cylinder is pushed down with force and then rolled along the ground; when the vehicle is transported, it is not fixed firmly, the cylinders collide with each other, and are pushed down directly from the vehicle, etc. . For example, an oxygen production plant in a city uses a car to transport oxygen cylinders to a certain enterprise. When unloading the car, the oxygen cylinder is pushed down and hits another cylinder, causing both cylinders to explode at the same time.

Overloaded. Oxygen cylinders are overfilled due to violation of operating procedures or operational errors during filling, which increases the pressure in the cylinder and exceeds its allowable stress, and finally explodes due to excessive plastic deformation.
