Have you ever wondered what to do with all of those empty compressed gas cylinders taking up space in your garage? If the cylinders are no longer needed, there is a legitimate way to recycle them.

Some folks decide to rent their gas cylinders instead of buying gas. In such a situation, after the cylinder is empty, you would need to return it to the location where you hired it. You may have it refilled if you need to keep ordering additional gas. But when you possess the cylinder and it is no longer needed, that is when we step in to make sure you know exactly what to do with it.

How to Properly and Safely Recycle a Cylinder

Gas cylinders should never be thrown away in the garbage while being disposed of. It is not a good idea to just discard the tanks in the trash since some of them can still contain dangerous gases. You never know what those gases can potentially react with if you don't know what else is in the trash. Your compressed gas cylinders may be deemed dangerous depending on where you reside, in which case you must properly recycle them.

If the cylinder is in sufficient condition, it may be recertified in accordance with DOT guidelines. If decontamination is necessary, it might need to be transported to a facility that has been approved by the DOT.

You must conduct research to see whether any cylinders are considered hazardous garbage in your city before disposing of them. The laws in your state may differ from those in other states, so it's crucial to be aware of them.

Why It’s Important

One of the main justifications for recycling gas cylinders is safety. If the valve is left open, even empty gas cylinders might possibly provide a dangerous atmosphere. Any remaining gas may be forced out with atmospheric temperature changes and pressure decreases.

It can become harmful depending on the kind of gas expelled and how much of it there is. While gas can leak out, air can also enter the cylinder and cause interior corrosion, as well as internal damage to the cylinder itself. It can also contaminate the cylinder.

Always assuming that a cylinder is full when it is empty is a good rule of thumb to keep in mind. Make sure your empty cylinders are properly marked, that the valve is closed and that you keep them apart from your full cylinders.

If there is any damage or if the cylinder was exposed to anything that might lead to contamination, kindly let the recipient know as well. Although the person or business recycling the cylinders usually checks them, it's better to be safe than sorry.

If you have a press foot cylinder, we can recycle it for you. However, depending on its condition, we might have to charge a fee.

Acetylene cylinders in the press foot design have a cap placed onto the base of the cylinder. These are problematic cylinders because rust may form without any way to identify it before a catastrophic failure because moisture can penetrate between the layers of metal. The only time a cylinder is paid to be recycled is when its quality is subpar. We can handle all other pressurized cylinders.
