Cylinder Filling

May 15, 2022

Correct filling of gas cylinders is one of the keys to ensure the safe use of gas cylinders. Improper filling, such as gas mixing and overfilling, are dangerous.

Gas mixing refers to the filling of two gases or liquefied gases in the same cylinder. The most common mixing phenomenon is the mixing of combustion-supporting gas such as oxygen with combustible gas. For example, the gas cylinder originally filled with combustible gas (such as hydrogen, methane, etc.) has not been replaced, cleaned, etc., and there is residual gas in the bottle. Used to fill with oxygen. If these two media react chemically under suitable conditions, it will cause a serious explosion accident. Therefore, mixing of gases is never allowed.

Overfilling is also a common cause of cylinder rupture and explosion. Excessive filling of the cylinder is affected by the ambient temperature, especially in summer, the liquefied gas in the cylinder expands rapidly due to the temperature rise, which causes the pressure in the cylinder to increase sharply, causing the cylinder to burst and explode.

In order to prevent overfilling of gas cylinders, the following aspects should be done. The filling work should be carried out by a special person, and the filling personnel should receive safety education and assessment on a regular basis; the filling personnel should operate carefully, and should not leave their posts without authorization. Weighing instruments used for liquefied gas filling shall be calibrated at least once every 3 months, and the maximum weighing value of the weighing instruments used is 1.5 to 3 times the commonly used value. Press the bottle to stand up the card and record it carefully. Filling cylinders should have a special person responsible for repeated weighing. If automatic metering equipment is installed, the excess can automatically alarm and cut off the valve.
